Course objectives
The aim of the course is to gain information and knowledge in the field of non-profit organizations, their types and divisions, their management and benefits to society.
Learning outcomes
The student can define the areas necessary for understanding concepts and relationships in the non-profit sector, define the basic roles of non-governmental non-profit organizations in the national economy, explain how the non-profit sector is structured, can distinguish different types of non-profit organizations and define them from the perspective of different types of organizations, explain the importance of these organizations; is able to define the financing of non-governmental non-profit organizations and the essence of fundraising, distinguish different types of donors and their basic characteristics, further define the specifics of management and marketing of non-profit organizations, can define the relationship between non-profit organizations, public administration and the commercial sector.
Syllabus
    • 1.Non-profit sector, non-governmental non-profit organizations and the national economy
    • Definition of the non-profit sector according to the principle of financing and according to Pestoff. Justification of the existence of non-profit organizations. Theory of non-profit organizations. Definition of non-profit organizations according to Salamon and Anheier. Typology of non-profit organizations in the Czech Republic. Non-profit organizations by nature of mission. Non - profit organizations by subject of activity.
    • 2. Associations and Public Benefit Companies
    • New Civil Code and Associations. Definitions, registration, authorities of associations. Procedure for establishing associations. Business activities of associations. Law on Public Benefit Companies. Definitions, registration, OPS authorities. Management and business activities of OPS. Changes in OPS legislation.
    • 3.Fundace
    • New Civil Code and Foundation. Foundation. Definitions, registration, foundation authorities. Procedure for their establishment. Management and business activities of foundations. Changes in their legislation. Endowment funds.
    • 4. Churches and religious societies
    • Act on Freedom of Religion and the Status of Churches and Religious Societies. Definition, registration, special rights of the CNS. Ecclesiastical legal entities. Church education. Financing of church organizations.
    • 5. Volunteering
    • History of volunteering. Types and support of volunteering. Volunteers, volunteer centers and organizations. Volunteer service in the Czech Republic.
    • 6. Financing of non-governmental non-profit organizations and fundraising
    • Public sources of financing - state administration and self-government, endowment investment fund. Non-public sources of funding - foundations, business, individual donors, income from own activities, membership fees, income from lotteries and games, tax benefits. Definitions and basic rules of fundraising. The importance of defining the mission in NGOs. Typology and motivation of donors. Fundraiser - Professional or volunteer.
    • 7.Management and marketing of non-profit organizations
    • Essential features of management in non-profit organizations. The nature of the goods produced, the needs of customers, planning, organizing and decision-making. Selection and management of employees. Control in non-profit organizations. Theoretical basis of marketing in non-profit organizations. Customers, marketing plan and marketing mix. Public relations in non-profit organizations. Creating a marketing strategy for a non-profit organization.
    • 8. Non-governmental non-profit organizations and the relationship with public administration and the commercial sector
    • Models of the relationship between the state and non-governmental non-profit organizations - the theory of interdependence, ongoing and deferred cooperation. Cooperation between public administration institutions and NGOs. Government Council for NGOs. Association of NGOs in the Czech Republic. Cooperation between regions and NGOs. Cooperation between commercial and non-profit sector. Forms of cooperation. Motivation of companies to cooperate. Benefits of cooperation of these sectors for companies, non-profit organizations, individuals and communities.
