Course objectives
To familiarize students with the basic concepts of regional economy and policy, factors of localization and placement and manifestations of territorial-spatial aspects in economics. Attention will be focused on determining the goals and strategies of regional policy and on identifying the tools used to secure these goals. This course also includes an explanation of regional economic policy strategies in the Czech Republic, including determining the priorities of solutions in the crucial sectors of the contemporary economy and the links between regional policy of the Czech Republic and EU regional policy.
Learning outcomes
The student distinguishes the basic terminology of the region, regional economy and economy, can categorize regions and knows the regional structure of the Czech Republic. Explains approaches to territorial development in the context of sustainability and evaluates their impacts. Distinguishes theoretical concepts of regional development, discusses sources, barriers and limits of development with regard to social and environmental goals. The student explains the essence of regional policy, analyses its justification in the system of national economic policies and is familiar with its instruments. Knows the development of regional policy in the Czech Republic, its institutional framework and regional problems, which he can analyse and relate to regional differences. Discusses the possibilities of using regional policy instruments to mitigate them. The student describes indicators of the economic level of regions, knows the concept of competitiveness and analyses the economic level of regions in the Czech Republic. Is familiar with the sectoral structure, economic sectors and NACE classification and discusses the relationships between the structure of regions, competitiveness and regional policy.
