Course objectives (in Czech)
The aim of this advanced course is to bring students to an internationally recognised level of written and spoken English. Past experience has shown that it opens new opportunities to students in companies, teaching etc. because it shows that the student has reached a very high competence in general English.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • Struktura výkladu:
    1. A sense of adventure
    2. Work and play
    3. Nearest and dearest
    4. Seeing is believing
    5. Extensive review of units 1 to 4 and practice test
    1. A sense of adventure
    Picture discussion, Reading: words about travel(travel, journey, voyage or trip?) and feelings; travel games, multiple matching.
    Use of English: diagnostic test of twelve parts of grammar; word formation, changing nouns to adjectives and vise-versa; how to form questions.
    Listening,: giving instructions.
    Composition transactional letter, the difference between a formal and informal letter; identifying beginnings, contents and endings of formal or informal letters; practice writing.
    Revision and extension: word building (verb to noun).
    2. Work and play.
    Picture discussion, Reading: words about work/employment; pronouns (e.g. it, she) demonstratives (e.g. this, that) and possessive adjectives (e.g. my, her) in a gapped text.
    Use of English: present tenses
    Composition (speech): welcoming and introducing.
    Revision and extension, Listening test: Revision of units 1 and 2.
    3. Nearest and dearest
    Picture: discussion.
    Use of English: making comparisons; comparative and superlatives; comparing families around the world;
    Listening: note taking
    Reading: The other Jackson; adjectives and their opposites.
    Composition (describing an object): adjectival order.
    Speaking: describing people and places
    Revision and extension: units 1 to 3; (question formations, indirect questions, comparative structures, error correction.
    4. Seeing is believing
    Picture discussion. Speaking: picture prompts ( e.g. in the foreground, in the background).
    Reading: inserting more information; When a computer error is a fatal mistake.
    Listening: multiple matching of descriptions and occupations
    Use of English: review of word forms; phrasal verbs (take ).
    Composition (narrative): punctuation and layout of direct speech
    Revision and extension, listening test: Revision of units 3 and 4
    5. Extensive review of units 1 to 4 and practice tests of:
    Reading, Writing; Use of English, Listening, and Speaking
