- The aim of the course is to familiarize students with basic economic categories and the relationships between them. The course is intended to prepare students of the Faculty of Business and Entrepreneurship for the study of other economic subjects related to acquiring basic theoretical knowledge in the field of microeconomics. It deals primarily with goods, the market and its elements, consumer and producer behavior, income, costs and profit, factor markets and the role of the state in the economy from the perspective of microeconomics.
- Learning outcomes
- The student understands the basic principles of economics, the role of models and economic approaches, can apply methods and tools of economic analysis and understands the division of economics. He analyzes the market, its subjects (households, firms, state), supply, demand, price and competition, including price formation and types of competition. He can define consumers, their preferences, budget constraints and utility, derive an individual demand curve and analyze the elasticity of demand and its impact on sales. He can analyze a company, production processes, costs, profit and optimum of a company in the short and long term. He understands the conditions of general equilibrium and efficiency in exchange, production and production mix, uses Edgeworth box diagrams and understands Pareto efficiency. He can describe the functioning of perfect and imperfect competition (monopolies, oligopolies), analyze markets for production factors (land, labor, capital) and evaluate their functioning. He understands the nature of market failures (externalities, public goods, information asymmetry) and the role of the state in their elimination. They can design and analyze tools such as Pigouvian taxes, emission quotas, or emissions markets to reduce negative externalities and promote sustainability.
