Course objectives
In these lectures the thermodynamic principles are derived, as far as possible, from the principles of quantum mechanics of many particle systems, and the students are introduced to the basics of statistical physics.
Syllabus
  • Phase space, Hilbert space, distribution function, density matrix, Liouville equation.
Second quantization and the Fock space, ideal and non-ideal quantum gases, two-particle interaction.
Microcanonical, Gibbs canonical and macrocanonical ensemble, open system statistics. The main thermodynamic theorems and their consequences, thermodynamic potentials, Maxwell relations, thermodynamic processes.
Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics: Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, width of spectral lines, equipartition theorem and the heat capacity, one-and diatomic ideal gas, relation between quantum and classical statistical physics, Gibbs paradox, paramagnetism and ferromagnetism.
Entropy and information: Entropy and its properties, Maxwell's demon, the relationship of thermodynamics and information theory, quantum computing.
Heat capacity of solids: Dulongův - Petitův law, Einstein model, Debye model of crystal. Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac distribution, Bose-Einstein condensation for bosonic gas, black body radiation, ideal and degenerate fermionic gas. Fluctuation of energy and particle number fluctuations of thermodynamic quantities.
