- 1. Structural properties of sentence complexing in written and spoken communication. (Sentence complexes as configurations of clauses, semi-clauses, clause-like units, absolute and supplementive clauses, nominalised and elliptical structures.} 2. Tendencies in sentence complexing (processing strategies) in English and in Czech (cf. the relatively compact structures in English and relatively loose structures of sentence complexes in Czech]. 3. Information packaging in sentence complexes and its impact on structural configurations within the sentence complex; constructions for highlighting (clefts, pseudo-clefts, extraposition, fronting, existential and presentational "there"; left- and right-dislocation; word-order inversion. 4. The principle of language economy and its impact on sentence patterning (cf. ellipsis, substitution, means of condensation. 5. Scalar approach to co-ordination and subordination; to the main and dependent clauses. 6. The role of context in decoding syntactic structures (the interplay of verbal, situational and pragmatic contexts). 7. Qualitative and quantitative criteria of sentence complex "complexity" (ramification of communicative lines, recursiveness, layered dependency). 8. Sentence complex as a micro-structure within the macro-structure of the text (sentence complex as a contribution to the neatly woven texture). 9. Doing sentence complexes - hands-on experience with parallel samples of sentence complexes (with English as the source language and Czech as the target language). Literatura: Bybee, J. and M.
