Course objectives
The course provides students with an overview of various tools used for editing translated text from English to Czech. The main objective is to learn the possibilities of text editing and avoid the most common mistakes while translating the text. The theory is supported by many exercises and examples in interactive study material.
Syllabus
  • Introduction - course overview
    Correction code in Czech translations, basic rules and tools
    Text editing, editing project
    Translator as an editor: register
    Content proofreading: factual correctness, terminology
    Grammar proofreading: Spelling and spell-check, punctuation (author´s correction)
    Grammar proofreading: Syntax, prepositions and word order (native speaker corrections)
    Style proofreading: Inflection and agreement - tense and aspect, gender, number
    Style proofreading: Lexical differences between Czech and English. False friends, collocations
    Intrusion - source language: too literal, numbers, dates, measurement
    Intrusion - target language: too free (problems of the translation ? omission and addition)
