Course objectives
The subject opens the way to a basic understanding of the cultural history of medieval and modern times in the Czech Republic, to the knowledge of the basic concepts of art history, material culture, art and history of everyday life. Introduces the problems of study material artefacts that form the basis for a broadly worded history of material culture. The introduction to the topic and outline methodological approaches and problems follow their own lectures, which focus on individual aspects of material culture and everyday life of medieval and early modern society in the context of Central Europe. Deeper attention is paid to aspects of everyday life in the spiritual and material culture associated either with religious ritual or individual aspects of everyday life such as trade, crafts, guilds, housing, meals, etc.
Syllabus
  • 1. Methodological aspects and problems dealing with the history of material culture and everyday life.
    2. Characteristics of material culture and everyday life from the 13th to the 15th century.
    3. Basic concepts of the Christian liturgy, the basic concepts of the spiritual culture of the Middle Ages, the church and monastic organization in the Middle Ages, the foundations of religious organizations in our country and the Hussite wars.
    4. Basic characteristics of religious orders and religious orders until the end of the 15th century in our country, their role in colonization and urbanization, system of monasteries, orders of knighthood.
    5. Basic types of monastic settlements with examples, the basic layout and a breakdown of the monastery.
    6. Social breakdown nobility manors - building types, building development, basic types of royal castles and their development until the end of the Late Gothic period with examples, the basic structural and functional concepts of castellology.
    7. Formation and types of cities, urban law, urban culture; guilds, their formation, structure, organization, material culture connected with guilds, townhouse and its transformation into the end of the late Gothic period.
    8. Village church, characteristics, building development, its role in the life of the village society, the basic arrangement of the presbytery of the village church, basic types of country house.
    9. Medieval building works, the organization describes activities, basic personality employed by us (Matthew of Arras, Henry Parler, Ried) and their buildings.
    10. Rituals feudal power (enthronement, insignia, coronations and imperial Czech constitutional jewellery).
    11. City and the countryside in the early modern period, and equipment aristocratic residence in the 16th-18th centuries, and equipment townhouse in the 16th-18th century urban material culture of the early modern era, guilds and crafts.
    12. Churches, monasteries and places of pilgrimage in early modern times, spiritual currents of modern times and tied them with material culture, baroque festivities.
