Course objectives

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the systematic definition of nursing as an integral part of the healthcare system in which qualified general nurses perform their professional activities. The course explains the modern scientific (holistic) perspective on the health of each individual and its impact on economic transformation and changes in the organizational systems of healthcare.


It characterizes current societal needs within the European dimension of health policy and the implementation of extensive changes accompanied by the introduction of new legal regulations and standards. The expanded roles of general nurses are reflected in their professional education as well as in their functional profile in clinical practice.


The Functional Health Patterns model, as a framework for assessing health status, also defines the scope of nursing practice. Upon completion of the course, the student will be familiar with the systematic definition of nursing, understand the roles and competencies of general nurses, and be able to use a structured framework for assessing the health status of individuals, families, and communities.

Learning Outcomes:


Professional Knowledge: The student is able to characterize developmental trends influencing the development of and education in nursing. The student is able to characterize the concept of health and the main determinants of population health. The student is able to describe nurses’ responsibilities, expanded roles, and competencies. The student is able to explain the orientation of teaching and learning towards competency acquisition. The student is able to characterize the professional approach of nurses and the importance of the regulatory system of nursing practice.


Professional Skills: The student is able to use the systematic “Functional Health Patterns” framework when assessing health status, compile a nursing history, and distinguish between subjective and objective data.


General Competence: The student is able to independently and methodically apply the “Functional Health Patterns” framework when assessing the health status of various subjects (clients/patients, infants, young children, adolescents, families, and communities).


Competencies: The student will continue to develop and improve their ability to apply the “Functional Health Patterns” framework to various subjects during further studies and clinical practice.

Syllabus
Overview of Topics Covered in Lectures, Seminars, and Practical Classes:

  1. History of nursing, major trends influencing nursing education, nursing professional organizations in the Czech Republic, and international nursing professional organizations.
  2. Definition and characteristics of nursing as a scientific discipline, philosophy and holism in nursing.
  3. Metaparadigm and paradigm in nursing.
  4. Professional education of general nurses and midwives in Europe (standards for the education and training of general nurses, principles of the WHO strategy for the education of nurses and midwives, and concepts of educational content).
  5. Professional education of general nurses and midwives in Europe (standards for the education and training of general nurses, principles of the WHO strategy for the education of nurses and midwives, and concepts of educational content).
  6. Nurses’ competencies in practice – development of professionalism in nursing (the concept of competence, professional nursing, roles and competencies of nurses in a multidisciplinary team, standards of professional nursing performance, nurses’ knowledge and skills, and the regulatory system of nursing practice).
  7. Nursing assessment of health status (types of information and methods of obtaining it, development of a standardized model for health assessment).
  8. Functional Health Patterns – M. Gordon’s model and the framework for health assessment (importance for nursing practice; assessment of the health status of adult clients/patients, infants/children/adolescents; assessment of family health; assessment of community health).
  9. Dysfunctional Health Patterns and nursing diagnosis (distinguishing between functional and dysfunctional health patterns; NANDA nursing diagnoses in 11 areas of dysfunctional health patterns; health assessment in acute life-threatening conditions).
  10. Classification systems in nursing (development of new nursing terminology, current classification systems in nursing, Taxonomy I and Taxonomy II, overview of NANDA International nursing diagnoses 2015–2017; Nursing Interventions Classification – NIC; Nursing Outcomes Classification – NOC).

Assessment methods
Requirements for obtaining course credit: 80% attendance at practical classes (students who are unable to attend mandatory classes for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative method of fulfilling the study requirements by the instructor).


Course completion: A written assignment assessing health risks in a healthy individual according to the “Functional Health Patterns” framework.


Written test: Minimum pass mark of 80%.

Teacher's information
During continuous study, the student uses the study materials and completes selected correspondence assignments. In doing so, the student demonstrates knowledge of the compulsory literature and the content covered during face-to-face lectures. The student will be able to consult individually studied course topics on an ongoing basis via email, MS Teams, and individual or group consultations.

Requirement for course credit: A written assignment assessing health risks in a healthy individual according to the “Functional Health Patterns” framework.

Examination requirement: Written test with a minimum pass mark of 80%.

Face-to-face teaching: Definition of nursing as a scientific discipline, philosophy of nursing, holism, historical development, metaparadigm and paradigm, and conceptual models of nursing.

Self-study: Legislative aspects of the education of non-medical healthcare professionals, professional organizations, application of conceptual models in clinical practice, nurses’ competencies, and nurses’ roles.
