Cíle předmětu
The aim of the course is to introduce the issues of political transformation and lated democratic consolidation in the Czech Republic. There is also anan emphasis on coparison with other countries of Central Europe. Attention is paid to theoretical background, the issue of party families and the main differences in the form of parties and party systems in post-communist and Western Europe. Attention is also paid to the question of the transformation of parties and party systems in post-communist Europe after 1989.
Výstupy z učení
Students will expand their political science knowledge of political systems, political parties and party systems and will be able to confront the knowledge gained with contemporary party systems in Central Europe with a special emphasis on the Czech Republic. They will also deepen their knowledge of political science phenomena related to contemporary politics.
Osnova
1. Theory of transitions to democracy, main typologies. 2. The November 1989 events, the emergence of the Civic Forum and the Publics against the Violence, the transformation of the NF parties and the emergence of new or renewal of previously existing parties, the establishment of the process of democratic transition, 3. Analysis of the 1992 elections, pillars of right-wing politics, division of Czechoslovakia. 4. Analysis of the 1996 elections, formation of a minority government, programmatic differences between left and right. 5. Political situation in 1997, fall of the coalition government, formation of a new cabinet. Analysis of the 1998 elections, the new government and the so-called opposition agreement. 6. Elections to the Chamber of Deputies in 2002. Interpretation of the results, formation of the government. 7. Referendum on EU accession and European elections. Analysis of the 2006 parliamentary elections. 8. The fall of the government in 2009 and an analysis of the 2010 general election. 9. Municipal and regional politics. The theory of second order elections. 10. Electoral systems in the Czech Republic. Electoral reforms. Evolution of the party system. 11. Legislative anchoring of the political system in the Czech Republic. Legislative process in the Czech Republic. 12. Foreign policy of the Czech Republic, formation, actors, national interests. 13. Summary, the current political situation in the Czech Republic
