Syllabus
  • 1. The evolution of the HR function
    Key concepts: personnel management, human resource management and the human resource function and social constructionism. Explanation the role of line and departmental managers, the HR department and organizational performance.
    2. A strategic perspective: managing people at work
    Organizational behaviour: behaviour theory, organizational culture, climate and process. Work, organization and job design. The strategic HRM approach to resourcing. The components of strategic employee resourcing. Employer branding. The role of social media and social networking sites.
    3. Talent management
    Key concepts: talent, talent management, career and succession management. Formal and informal processes. Formal attempts aimed at identifying, developing, and using people who have been designated as talented. Management succession planning. Talent management strategy.
    4. Human resource management processes
    Key concepts: learning, training, coaching, mentoring and human resource development: the planning process, measurement and metrics. Learning and development strategies. Managing performance and rewards. Types of motivation and motivation strategies. The employment relationship.
    5. International human resource management
    Key concepts: national culture, global organization, global production, multinational companies. Expatriate worker and culture shock. Understanding the concept of a global organization, global employment, global HR policy and practice. International management competences the HR department and the international scene. Explanation the implications for the human resources function.
    6. International recruitment and selection
    Key concepts: hiring or employing, internal and external recruitment, assessment and selection. Defining and managing the international processes involved in recruitment and selection. Understanding the relationship between recruitment and selection and other HR activities. An economic and financial perspective on recruitment and selection. Workforce planning. Role of the international HR function.
    7. Human resource management: ethics, leadership and skills
    Key concepts: fairness at work, ethical dilemmas, moral principles and leadership illusion. Perspectives on workplace ethical dilemmas: understanding different ethical prisms and conflicts. Strategic HRM skills, business and problem-solving skills. Managing conflict. Political skills: dangers of politics and dealing with organizational politics.
