This paper is based on the characterization of the role of public administration regarding the problem solving of abounded and unused objects and areas known as brownfields, especially in relation to its regeneration. The regeneration of these brownfields has been recognized as a key instrument in the sustainable land management. The conversion of brownfields is more effective and should be more acceptable to the public than the utilization of free developable land because of scarce a more expensive resource, especially in densely populated areas. We must also not forget the public interest in resolving the existence of brownfields perceived through SMART growth and urban sprawl and the process of suburbanization. That is why it is necessary to engage the public administration in cases in which the private sector is failing. This paper summarizes some of the selected tools of the public administration for problem solving of brownfield, a particularly defines the public institutions engaging in brownfields regeneration as well. Standard secondary data are used and combined with data from primary research carried out in relation between municipalities of the Moravian-Silesian Region and its activities in solving problems related to brownfields.
