N2  - This paper deals with dragons as the representation of power in George R. R. Martin´s A Song of Ice and Fire. Firstly, the concept of political authority in the series of novels is briefly introduced. Then the focus is placed on the gendered nature of political authority in the saga and the analysis of the political authority and power of female characters in the context of ownership and use of dragons. The paper further addresses ‘the woman and the dragon’ and ‘the man and the dragon’ motif in literature. The aim is to analyse the influence of dragons on gendered aspects of political authority in fantasy literature.
