N2  - In the countries of the former Yugoslavia, the work of Karel Čapek, although better known today for his children’s books, is read and enjoyed in general because of his artistry, his visions, and the originality of his ideas, even eighty years after his death. As the White Plague was strongly opposed by the Czechs before the II. World War, it was not well received in some ex-Yugoslav countries either. Such a situation prevailed in Serbia, where the plot caused a sensation and a huge political scandal. The White Plague was moved out of repertoires and forbidden to be played almost in all theatres in the country. After II. World War the plot could not be staged at all because of the former leader of Yugoslavia, Tito Marshal.
