Course objectives
The task of the course is to introduce students to the application of contemporary progressive methods in archeology with an emphasis on geoinformatics. Students first get acquainted with the theoretical starting points, then with the basic terminology and methodology. They acquire knowledge about technical equipment, software tools and spatial data, suitable for archaeological purposes. They will become familiar with the basic procedural parts of working with geodata, i.e. with collection, management, analysis and visualization of digital spatial information.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will orient himself in the application of contemporary progressive methods in archaeology.

  • 1. Introduction – background, terminology and methodology. 2. Chronology - dating methods. 3. Stratigraphy – new innovations of the traditional method. 4. Methods of archaeological prospecting. 5. Mathematical statistical methods of research evaluation 6. 3D documentation and visualization. 7. GIS in archeology – a carousel of questions and answers 8. Geoarchaeology, petroarchaeology 9. Chemical and physical analyses 10. Bioarchaeology – archaeobotany and archaeozoology 11. Bioarchaeology - anthropology. 12. Paleoecology and paleodemography. 13. Archeology of thought and the future of archaeology.
