Course objectives
The lecture course provides students with basic knowledge of the prehistory of the Czech lands (Bohemia, Moravia, Czech Silesia) in the Central European context from the point of view of archaeology. The aim is to provide sufficient knowledge equipment in this regard for specialized bachelor's studies as well as the ability to find purposeful orientation in professional literature, which includes thousands of titles. The interpretation is arranged in the sequence of the archaeological classification system from the beginning of human presence to the time of migration nations. Emphasis is placed on basic knowledge of the cultural systematics of individual sections of history and their characteristics in economic, social and spiritual terms. In the seminar, knowledge of lecture topics is practiced on the basis of a discussion over the listeners' papers and general debates.

Syllabus
  • 1. Definition of the term "Czech lands" and "Central Europe". Basic Central European syntheses and journals and their characteristic. Organization of archaeological work according to national archaeological communities and international significance cooperation in various ways. 2. Periodization of prehistoric times from the Old Paleolithic to the end of the migration of peoples, the sequence of archaeological cultures as an axis studies; meaning of relative and absolute dating. 3. Epoch changes from the point of view of archaeology. A brief description of the basic historical sections (hunting-gathering period; age of non-ferrous metals; iron age) in economic, social and spiritual terms with a note the main differences in the individual epochs of the archaeological taxonomic system. 4. Paleolithic. Cultural systematics and source base. Brief characteristics of individual cultures (chronology, territorial expansion, genesis, periodization and material content). 5. Mesolithic. Cultural systematics and source base. Brief characteristics of individual cultures (chronology, territorial expansion, genesis, periodization and material content). 6. Neolithic. Cultural systematics and source base. Brief characteristics of individual cultures (chronology, territorial expansion, genesis, periodization and material content). 7. Eneolithic.
