Course objectives

The phenomenon of long-distance communications in the Czech territory in the late Late Latin period and the Roman period can be viewed from different perspectives perspectives. Traditionally, this problem was solved on the basis of the testimony of ancient sources, by mapping the findings of the so-called imports and occurrence of ancient coins. Corridors of communication can also be explored within documented war conflicts (military locations, battle sites) based on terrain configuration using GIS computer programs. New technologies recently, they allow identifying specific sections of disappeared roads (aerial and LIDAR imaging) and verifying them in the field prospecting using metal detectors.

Syllabus

• 1. The form of roads, communications and trade in the ancient Mediterranean and Roman provinces; river transport 2. Written, iconographic and epigraphic sources; antique map works; methodological approaches and criticism of sources 3. The system of Czech oppida and important laten settlements; their connection to long-distance communications; traded goods 4. The phenomenon of the so-called amber trail in protohistoric periods; an example of northern Moravia 5. Import directions and ways of bringing Roman imports to the territory of the Czech Republic; movements of Roman and Germanic objects provenance in barbaric 6. Finds of ancient coins in the Czech lands; the importance of numismatics for the knowledge of communication corridors 7. Objects of Roman-provincial provenance in the Germanic barbarian environment on the territory of the Czech Republic – metals and glass 8. Objects of Roman-provincial provenance in the Germanic barbarian environment on the territory of the Czech Republic - ceramics 9. Transfers of technological innovations and superstructure phenomena 10. Roman-Germanic war conflicts, localities of a military nature and their connection to communications 11. Prediction of the passage of Roman troops through the territory of Moravia (campaign against Marobud and especially the Marcomannic War) based on findings and terrain configuration using GIS computer programs. 12. Overcoming more difficult terrains – findings in mountain passes, saddles and foothills; so-called travel offerings 13. Searching for specific sections of defunct roads – new technologies (aerial and LIDAR terrain imaging), off-road relics (imports, etc.), possibilities of detector prospecting (specific cases)
