Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to anthropology as a complex science of man and a collaborative science with archaeology. Special attention is paid to the descriptive and functional anatomy of the skeletal system (human osteology) also pointing out the most common pathological changes of the locomotor system. Students are also introduced to methods anthropological processing of human skeletal remains (field phase, laboratory treatment of bones, morphoscopic and morphometric assessment, sex and age estimation) and with the basics of paleodemography.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the study of anthropology. The inclusion of anthropology in the system of sciences. Division of anthropology into subfields. A brief history of world and Czech anthropology. 2. Introduction to human anatomy: Orientation on the human body. Basic anatomical terminology. 3. Human osteology: Introduction to osteology (macroscopic and histological structure of bones, types of bones, bone joints). 4. Human osteology: Bones of the trunk (spine and chest). 5. Human osteology: Bones of the upper limb. 6. Human osteology: Bones of the lower limb. 7. Human osteology: Skull and teeth. 8. Skeletal anthropology: Field phase of anthropological research of skeletal remains, laboratory treatment of bones. 9. Skeletal anthropology: Morphoscopic and morphometric assessment of bones, height estimation. 10. Skeletal anthropology: Methods of gender estimation on skeletal material (overview of methods, methodological limits). 11. Skeletal anthropology: Methods of age estimation on skeletal material (overview of methods, methodological limits). 12. Basics of paleodemography: Characteristics of paleodemographic indicators, limits of paleodemographic research. 13. Free topic and discussion.

Assessment methods
Credit. Regular and active participation in classes (minimum 70%). Mastering the final written test (success rate of at least 60%), or successful oral mastery examination (the oral examination will take place either as the primary form of examination or as method of examination in case of failure to master the written form of examination).
