Course objectives
The course deepens and expands the knowledge of political, economic and social aspects of historical development by selected areas of cultural and social development, which characterizes in the context of lifestyle history, spiritual and religious aspects, customs and mentalities. And regardless of social classes, from elites to marginalized groups. It provides a basic overview of the topic against the background of general tendencies and major events in the history of the Czech and European countries from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century with an emphasis on the cultural aspects of social everyday life. The interpretation is conceived chronologically and thematically, the aim is to lead students to the perception of context, to the ability to grasp the basic developmental tendencies and parallels, to orient themselves in basic concepts of Czech and European history. The seminar pays attention to selected problem areas of Czech and European cultural history. The student deepens the ability to work with literature and selected sources, skills in the application of methods of historical work.
Learning outcomes
By completing the course, the student will expand and deepen their knowledge of political, economic and social aspects of the historical development of the Middle Ages and early modern times by selected areas of cultural and social development. In particular, it will be an example analysis of the history of lifestyle, spiritual and religious life, customs and mentalities. Furthermore, the student will gain a basic overview of methodological discussions in the field of cultural history. The seminar part of the course will deepen students' ability to work independently with professional literature and selected sources.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the subject, terminology, methodology, sources and literature.
  • 2. The lands of the Czech Crown in the political, geopolitical and administrative-legal context (Europe; Empire; Habsburg Danube Monarchy).
  • 3. – 4. Selected aspects of political and economic-social history in the Middle Ages and early modern times - recapitulation. Selected aspects of pre-modern cultural history.
  • 5. – 6. Main trends in European cultural development; specifics of the Czech lands.
  • 7. – 8. Religious and spiritual development, education in Europe; specifics of the Czech lands.
  • 9. Art in European everyday life; example presentations with an emphasis on the Czech and Central European environment.
  • 10. – 12. Lifestyle, way, everyday life and mentalities of aristocratic / bourgeois / rural society.
  • 13. Personalities of European cultural history.
