Course objectives
The course introduces the main categories of mining and industrial heritage (transport, energy, the textile industry, food production and other key sectors) against the background of the basic characteristics of production methods and relations in pre-industrial and industrial times, archaeological monuments (pre-industrial mining, products and means of production), tangible immovable monuments (manufacturing/factory buildings and complexes), tangible movable artefacts (machinery and technical equipment) and intangible monuments (working conditions and conditions of modern times, rituals). It highlights the influence of industrial production in the process of urbanization and the transformation of the cultural landscape, including the creation of new industrial settlements, colonies and satellites and the formation of industrial agglomerations. Attention is paid to the possibilities of using and presenting technical monuments, complexes, etc. The theoretical and historical overview illustrates examples in the Czech lands. Field presentations/excursions are an integral part of it (pre-industrial mining heritage of Złoty Stok; industrial era Ostrava Michálkovice, Ostrava-Petřkovice; textile heritage of Krnov, Místek; technological flow of mining, coke-making and metallurgy in the Lower Vítkovice area; Upper Silesian district/Katovice region; examples of solitary sites: breweries, mills, distilleries).
