Course objectives

The course presents cultural monuments / heritage related to everyday life and activities of aristocratic families and their members of pre-modern and modern times. It characterizes the social class, aristocratic residences in terms of typology (castles, strongholds, fortresses, chateaux, ruins, city palaces), basic features of architectural and historical development, functions and equipment in relation to lifestyle, festivals and everyday life. It pays attention to settlements owned by the state, local government and private entities; does not take into account defunct and endangered buildings. It recalls an independent research direction focused on the research of medieval castles, fortresses and strongholds (castelology), its methods, results and personalities. It presents modern possibilities of presentation and animation of aristocratic residences, including examples of animation and educational programs (installed objects, thematic exhibitions, modern digital methods of access, reconstruction of events). He also points out the possibilities of using aristocratic residences for the purposes of contemporary regional practice (cultural events, concerts, exhibitions, spaces for animation and performance in the field of culture and cultural history). It also outlines current problems associated with aristocratic residences (restitution disputes, defunct buildings). Field presentations / excursions are an integral part. They can take place in selected localities of the Czech lands, or in cooperation with partner workplaces in the border areas of Poland and Slovakia.

Learning outcomes

By completing the course, the student will comprehensively expand and deepen the overview of cultural monuments related to everyday life and activities of aristocratic families and their members of pre-modern and modern times. They will acquire knowledge about aristocratic residences in terms of their typology, including the characteristics given by the architectural and historical development, functions and equipment in relation to the lifestyle, festivals and everyday life of nobility. Last but not least, the student will get acquainted with the possibilities of using aristocratic residences for the purposes of current regional practice (cultural events, concerts, exhibitions, spaces for animation and performance in the field of culture and cultural history).

Syllabus

• 1. Introduction, terminology, methods, sources and literature.
• 2. Social stratification of the nobility, changes of roles and activities (basic chronological-factual overview with emphasis on the Czech lands / Empire) - brief recapitulation.
• 3. Everyday life and festivities of noble strata, spiritual culture.
• 4. Material immovable monuments and their typology of aristocratic residences, change of functions, cultural and social connections, landscape complexes.
• 5. Material movable heritage: aristocratic furniture (authentic presentations / so-called collections from confiscated objects) and their further use, heraldic, funeral artifacts, etc.
• 6. Ways of presentation of castelological monuments.
• 7. – 8. Example presentations of buildings, interiors, castle grounds from the Czech Republic and abroad.
• 9. Possibilities of using castle and chateau complexes, their restoration and sustainability.
• 10. Cultural tourism with a focus on aristocratic monuments / heritage, hiking trails, etc.
• 11. – 13. Preparation and implementation of field presentation / excursion (+ 2 days).

Teaching methods

Theoretical and practical preparation (lecture, seminar), frontal teaching, work with resources, discussion.

Assessment methods

Written test (or oral exam). Attendance at the seminar (minimum 75%), report, active approach. Compulsory participation in the excursion.
