Course objectives
The aim of the course is to deepen the students' understanding of religiosity and religious behaviour of the people in the past. The course will also strengthen students' orientation in the modern theories and approaches to religion. The main focus lies on Christianity in its various forms (from the pragmatic reason of available historical records easily accessible to students). The other Abrahamic religions, i.e. Judaism and Islam, are also paid attention. From the spectrum of approaches to the history of Christianity (e.g. history of missions, history of canon law etc.) precedence is given to tracing the history of tensions between orthodoxy and heterodoxy which enables to explore not only the main normative teachings but also the marginalized and repressed forms of Christianity. The emphasis is put on the fuzziness of the border that has separated the true believers from the heretics.
