Course objectives
The course provides students with a comprehensive overview of the issues of bibliographic communication of information. Bibliographic communication and its terminology, historical and current ways of distributing bibliographic information are explained. Emphasis is placed on current bibliographic databases of professional information sources, national bibliographies in an international context. Students are acquainted with current formats for the exchange of bibliographic information and metadata files that are used for this purpose. Exercises follow the content of lectures.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- identify basic elements of bibliographic communication;
- identify and specify bibliographic data in library systems;
- search for and process information in current bibliographic information sources;
- use bibliographic metadata files for further processing of information in library systems.

  • Bibliographic communication - characteristics, terminology
  • Bibliographic description - types of bibliographic records, rules for bibliographic description
  • Methods of processing and distribution of bibliographic information - historical development, currently used
  • Bibliographic information systems - technological bases, types of databases, databases as information sources, producers, aggregators, distributors and database centers
  • Exchange formats and metadata for bibliographic information systems
  • Practical work with bibliographic databases - national bibliography in an international context, bibliographic information systems of professional information, specifics of bibliographic description of new media (websites, blogs, etc.).

Participation in seminars min. 75%. Active participation in seminars, elaboration of correspondence tasks, study of compulsory literature, elaboration of assigned seminar work and its presentation. Exam: written test.
