Course objectives
The course introduces literature in an intermedia perspective in blocks devoted gradually to the issues of intermediality, the relationship between literature and music and fine arts in pre-modern times. The course is followed by the course Literature in Intermedia Perspective II.
Learning outcomes
The student will gain an overview of the relations about the historical changes in the relations between literature, music and fine arts.
Syllabus
  • 1. Intermediality - introduction and basic concepts, literary perspective
  • 2. Literature and music - introduction and basic concepts
  • 3. Literature and music in an intermediate relationship
  • 4. The relationship between music and language. The relationship between speech and music. Music and mythology.
  • 5. The relationship between music and literature in the ancient Middle Eastern nations and in ancient Greece. Christian liturgical singing. Spiritual songs and games. Artificial secular creation.
  • 6. Origin of polyphony. The relationship between literature and music in ars antiqua and ars nova. The relationship between literature and music in the Czech Gothic and Hussites. The relationship between literature and music in the Renaissance, in the period of transalpine humanism and the Reformation. Style synthesis. The relationship between literature and music in the Czech lands in the 16th century
  • 7. The relationship between music and literature in the period of Baroque, Classicism and Romanticism
  • 8. Literature and fine arts - introduction and basic concepts
  • 9. The development of ancient fine arts and its reflection in literary works and important works of art that have become literary models
  • 10. Development of medieval art, its reflection in literary work (topographic and literature, technological recipes) and contemporary inspirational patterns (hagiographic literature), architectural swatches, the relationship between scholastic theological texts and architectural work, the "second life" of medieval art in the 18th and 19th century - Gothic novel, Gothic revival and the genesis of neo-Gothic architecture
  • 11. Development of Renaissance art, its reflection in literary work (Giorgio Vasari and his Nordic epigons, architectural treatises and their influence) and contemporary inspirational patterns (ancient ecphrase as a model of contemporary painting), architectural treatises of the Renaissance period and their influence on contemporary architectural production
  • 12. Development of baroque art, its reflection in literary work (Bohuslav Balbín) and contemporary inspirational patterns (baroque hagiographic literature, love paintings), the relationship between literature and architectural work in the Baroque period
  • 13. The art of classicism and romanticism, its reflection in literary work (J. J. Winckelman and texts on ancient art) and contemporary inspirational patterns (manuscripts and national myths - manuscripts Královedvorský and Zelenohorský, Ossian's songs), palladianism and contemporary literature
