Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with basic information about the context of the history of world and Czech theatre of the 20th century up to the present. Attention will be focused both on the aesthetic and philosophical concepts of theatre and dramatic production in individual periods, as well as on the development of staging forms, scenography and acting. Students will acquire key knowledge about the development of drama and theatre conventions of individual historical stages.
Learning outcomes
Orientation in the history of world and Czech theatre from the beginning of the 20th century to the present.
Ability to characterize fundamental tendencies in development of Czech theatre in social context.
Ability to analyse dramatic texts in context of theatre staging practices of each period.

  • 1. Reforms of European theatre in the first half of the 20th century.
  • 2. Theatre and drama 1918-1945 in Europa and in the United States. Experimental theatre.
  • 3. Czech drama and theatre 1918-1945: official theatre stages. Key figures of Czech directing (Jaroslav Kvapil, František Zavřel, K. H. Hilar…).
  • 4. Czech theatre Avant Garde: Osvobozené divadlo/Liberated Theatre, Czech theatre directors (Jindřich Honzl, Jiří Frejka, E. F. Burian).
  • 5. Czech interwar drama.
  • 6. Existentialism & Theatre of the Absurd.
  • 7. Theatre after World War II: Second theatre reform (theatres nd directors).
  • 8. Drama in the second half of the 20th century.
  • 9. Czech theatre in totalitarian system (1945-1989), periodization and tendencies.
  • 10. Important Czech theatre companies and directors (1945-1989). Author's theatre, Studio theatres.
  • 11. Famous Czech playwrights (1945-1989).
  • 12. Tendencies in contemporary European theatre: Changes in dramaturgy and directors. Contemporary European playwrights.
