Course objectives
The course provides an introduction to museology. It acquaints students with subject, methods, goal and terminology of museology as an independent research field and defines it in relation to museography (museum theory) and in relation to other humanities and social sciences. However, this introduction is not asymptomatic: it is based on the Z. Z. Stránský's conception of museology as a study of a human's specific value approach to reality, theoretically based on the concept of "museality". We will also deal with the internal division of museology into individual subdisciplines and acquaint students with some current tendencies and problems of the field (especially in realm of the so-called new and critical museology).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- characterize museology as an independent scientific discipline;
- determine the place of museology in the system of humanities;
- understand the systematics of museology;
- use museological terminology;
- understand the basic museological relations, expressed by the terms "museality", "museum phenomenon", "musealization".
