Course objectives
This course aims to provide a scholarly examination of Poland's historical trajectory during the 20th and 21st centuries. It seeks to explore the character of Poland's rebirth and its position in the interwar world, the dynamics of Polish affairs during World War II, the role of the People's Republic of Poland within the socialist states after 1945, and the specific economic, social, and political developments that shaped Poland in the 20th and early 21st centuries. Additionally, the course will delve into the systemic and economic transformations that occurred during the Third Republic of Poland, analyzing its Euro-Atlantic course. The presentation of various historiographical positions towards the Second Polish Republic, the People's Republic of Poland, and the Third Polish Republic will foster a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.
Learning outcomes
The students will gain a basic overview of Polish history during the 20th and 21st centuries by learning about the key figures and facts.

  • 1. Poland's Regaining of Independence and Subsequent State Rebuilding. 2. Analysis of Social, Political, and Economic Relations in the Second Polish Republic until 1926, 3. The Rule of the "Sanacja" Camp: From the May Coup to the "Brest" Elections. 4. The Final Years of Pitsudski's Rule (1931-1935). 5. Internal Challenges and the International Situation of Poland from 1935 to 1939. 6. The Polish Problem in the Politics of the Great Powers during World War II. 7. The Rise of the Communist Left to Power. 8. Political Transformations: Strengthening the New Government System (1944-1947). 9. The Economic and Social Landscape of Poland from 1944 to 1949. 10. A Course on the Soviet Road to Socialism: Analyzing Stalinism in the Polish Context. 11. The Socio-Political Crisis of 1956 and the Period of Relative Stabilization (1957-1970). 12. The Decade of thel970s: "Solidarity," Martial Law, and the Decline of the People’s Republic of Poland. 13. The Breakthrough of 1989: The Formation of a New Political System and the European Course of the Third Republic.
