Course objectives

The Enlightenment, characterized by the "rule of reason," led man to emancipation on the path to the lasting affirmation of human and civil rights. From the end of the 18th century, the development was towards civil society, the emergence of national movements and the gradual building of the pillars of a democratic establishment. Do we know where the roots of the system we are part of are? The course will focus on turning points in European history - the French Revolution with an episode of the government of Napoleon Bonaparte, their political, cultural and social implications for the formation of civil society in Europe in the first half of the 19th century. Seminar lessons are conducted on the basis of systematic work with compulsory and recommended literature including translations or originals of written and iconographic historical sources.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the beginnings of the formation of civil society at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries;
- identify and describe the milestones of the historical development of revolutionary and Napoleonic France;
- to analyze the effects of developments in France in other European countries in the first half of the 19th century.

• 5. Citizen, nation, culture: revolutionary France III. Civic religions, cults and celebrations. Civil society, education and social control.
• 6. Citizen, nation, culture: revolutionary France IV. Art and politics, culture in the service of the nation.
• 7. Napoleon I. and Europe: politics, visions, perspectives I. From the first French Republic to the First Empire.
• 8. Napoleon I. and Europe: politics, visions, perspectives II. The constitutional, administrative and legal system of France in the shadow of Napoleon's authority, hierarchy of power and management.
• 9. Napoleon I. and Europe: politics, visions, perspectives III. Power and foreign policy. Napoleon's political visions, their impact on European society and the process of creating a new map of Europe.
• 10. Napoleon I. and Europe: politics, visions, perspectives IV. Performing arts, culture and cultural policy.
• 11. Europe on barricades and the "spring of nations" I. "We and they" in the age of transformation. Responses to the French Revolution and Napoleon's policy in selected European countries.
