Course objectives

The seminar extends the knowledge which students gained in the frame of lectures of the history of antiquity. It deals with the topics which there was not enough time for in the lectures - e.g. slavery as one of marked phenomena of the life of antique society, an agricultural guestion linked with political life, more detailed characteristics of Athens democracy, Rome - German relationships in our area, all of them based on studies of antique authors as a primary resource.

Learning outcomes

The knowledge of history of Greek and Roman history and analysis of works by selected ancient authors. Focused on familiar and longitudinal passages of works related to important events in the ancient world. Adibility of independent judgment and work with text - historical source.

Syllabus

• 
  1. A comparison of ancient and modern democracy-Thucydides, Peloponnesian war.
  2. Reflection of real political life in Aristofanes´ comedies
  3. Transformations of the relations of the Greek poleis to the Persian Empire, Herodotus history.
  4. The role of personality in history (based on the analysis of the Thukydides´ history of the Peloponnesian War).
  5. Demosthenes´ speech to the citizens, his fight for the freedom of Greece
  6. Seven Wonders of the world in the works of ancient authors.
  7. The agricultural question in Rome - Cato Maior, De agricultura.
  8. Pompeii-their importance for the knowledge of the life of the ancient society.
  9. The causes of the crisis of the Roman society in the 1. St. BC. (Appian, Sallust, Cicero, Plutarch).
  10. Image of the Gauls and Germans in Caesar's Writings about the war of Gallic.
  11. Augustus and his pax Romana in the present works.
  12.The Roman satire of the 1. St. as a reflection of society.
