Course objectives
Interpretation seminar I. The aim of the subject is to introduce students to the methods and possibilities of interpretation of the wider socio-historical and meaningful context of urban, architectural, historical or cultural values in the most diverse types of environments shaped by human activity. At the same time, the seminar is used for practical practice of interpretation possibilities and verification of actually acquired abilities. Therefore, a reasonable part of the teaching is carried out in the field so that it is possible for all participants to check in situ the consistency between theoretical assumptions, knowledge and reality. In accordance with the need to proceed with a comprehensive interpretation from the whole to details, the seminar is divided into two parts (into two semesters). The first part is devoted to residential units, the assumptions of their creation and functioning, determining structures, their functions and meaning in the changes of time, mutual connections, etc., with an emphasis on preserved forms and non-preserved components, whose traces can, however, be derived from the formation of existing structures.
Learning outcomes
After completing both parts of the seminar, students should not only be able to orient themselves at a sufficient professional level in the preserved environment of the selected locality conditioned by historical development, but above all, using the acquired interpretation skills, to adequately analyze, understand and competently interpret the development context and reveal the meanings in other European localities of a comparable type. This is the basis of a universal professional orientation in the issue of historical settlements and a prerequisite for their qualified further research or professional activity almost anywhere in the Czech Republic, but also in other European regions.
