Course objectives
One semester lecture course focusing on the creation and development of art museums and galleries. The aim is to provide a comprehensive picture of the nature, structure and quality of art and historic collections of free and applied art on the example of the world (London, Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Milan, Munich, Venice, etc.) and local museums and galleries (National Gallery in Prague, Prague Castle Picture Gallery, Moravian Gallery in Brno, Olomouc Museum of Art, Silesian Museum in Opava, Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava, etc.). Emphasis will be placed on the creation and establishment of collections, their nature and specificity in the historical development and in contemporary context, along with the current trends and challenges in creating permanent exhibitions, thematic exhibitions, projects and other ways of presenting art and handicraft works. One of the key points would explanation of curator's role in creating exhibitions and also various strategies that can be managed in the presentation of older and contemporary art. Lectures will follow the different roles that museum and gallery institutions play in contemporary discourse about art that is defined and institutionalized by these institutions. Art museum as a temple, museum of art as a symptom of epoch without God (Hans Sedlmayr), museum of art as the end of art (Hans Belting, Douglas Crimp), museum of art as the end of museums (Nelson Goodmann), museum of art as a ritual (Carol Duncan), contemporary museum of André Malraux, Les Immatériaux of Jean-François Lyotard, art museum as an institution, museum discourse and the new museology (Mieke Bal), museum of art in the view of Joseph Kosuth, museum exhibitions as a reinterpretation of art, tradition and avant-garde in the contemporary museum.

    2. Historical development of gallery-type institutions and museums.
    3. Selected examples of collections of world museums and galleries (London, Berlin, Vienna, and Nuremberg).
    4. Selected examples of collections of museums and galleries world (Paris, Milan, Munich, Venice).
    5. Art Gallery Museum in the Czech lands and their collections (National Gallery in Prague, Prague Castle Picture Gallery, Moravian Gallery in Brno).
    6. Galleries, art museums in the Czech lands and their collections (Olomouc Museum of Art, Silesian Museum in Opava, Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava).
    7. Old and contemporary art - a various strategies of presentation.
    8. Different concepts of understanding of the role of museums in contemporary art discourse (Sedlmayr, Belting, Goodmann).
    9. Galleries, art museums and Kunsthalle - divergent approaches.
    10. Tradition versus avant-garde and contemporary art museum.
