- Course objectives
- Based on the intense reading of canonical texts, this class is to introduce students into German literature from the 20th century. In addition, some basic issues of how to write literary history, elementary techniques of analyses and iterpretation, and the most important facts from general history as well as the most prominent literary movements and groups are focused at. From the latter, expressionism, dadaism, the circle around Stefan George, and, from after 1945, the Gruppe 47 will be treated in more detail. In general, the period from about 1900 until after the German reunification from 1990 will be dealt with. Works by the following authors will be treated in greater detail: Ilse Aichinger, Gottfried Benn, Heinrich Böll, Bertolt Brecht, Alfred Döblin, Rainald Goetz, Ernst Jünger, Heinrich and Thomas Mann, Friederike Mayröcker. The seminar is based on the analysis of selected texts which, on its hand, presupposes intense reading and regular writing of little essays at home, e.g. protocols of read texts or parts of lectures listened to.
