Course objectives
The course deals with the German literature of the 20th century, the periodization and the most important directions and trends. Attention is given to the history of German literature from naturalism to the present, including the period after the reunification of Germany in the year 1990. Information about the most important authors and literary periods of German literary history will be included. The seminars will be based on the topics covered in the lectures. The focus of the course is the interpretation of selected literary works. The basis of the text analysis is student reading. The seminars will be realised in the form of homework assignments and consultations with the lecturer.

    Literature from the Weimar Republic, the 'Third Reich', and the Exile. Special focus at the works of Alfred Döblin, Ernst Jünger, Franz Kafka, Heinrich and Thomas Mann, and others.
    Bertolt Brecht and German drama in the 20th century
    The role of the Gruppe 1947 in German literature after war
    Womnen's writing in the 20th century
    The two German states, their reunification, and literary history
