Course objectives
Lecture series focuses on the issues of modern art, ie the problem of old and new in terms of art history as such (aesthetic and historical dimensions of tradition and innovation, the concept of avant-garde), in the strict sense of the word art, associated with the onset of secular democratized and nationalized the company and its internal transformation. The listener is led to the understanding of the dynamics of a period of artistic forms that - viewed in political history - is framed by the French Revolution (1789) and the disintegration of the Soviet bloc (about 1990).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the development of art from the end of the 18th century to the end of the 20th century;
- analyze art styles through selected works of art created by significant authors.

  • 1. Legacy of the Baroque, Baroque Classicism, the Enlightenment classicism, rococo
    2. Classicism in Europe, examples of architecture, the principles of classical poetics and specific iconography
    3. Romanticism in Europe
    4. Czech art in the first half of the 19th century - an overview of development, personality, work, institutions
    5. Art of the 19th century - from romanticism to realism, plenérismu origins in the French landscape painting
    6. Historicism second 19th century - the situation in painting and architecture
    7. Modern art - from Impressionism to Art Nouveau
    8. Situation of Art in Central Europe 1850-1914 - Austria and Czech country
    9. Art before the First World War - isms and the concept of the avant-garde
    10. The situation of interwar culture in Europe - between expression and classicism
    11. The Art totalitarian 30th - 50 20th century - Germany and the Soviet Union
    12. Part-time modernism after World War II - art in the age of consumption
