Course objectives
The course builds on the socio-anthropological understanding of gender roles as sets of social norms and expectations. The seminar explores the normative types of early modern sources which have shaped the models and norms of behaviour. The course will also explore ego-documents which enable to study the nuanced forms of the acceptance and refusal of gender roles by concrete historical actors. Attention will be paid to mechanisms of encouraging and discouraging various forms of gendered behaviour.
