- Course objectives
- Students will acquire basic knowledge in the field of evaluation of anthropogenic effects on ecosystem processes and the assessment of the main environmental problems in the environment.
- Syllabus
- 1. Cycling of elements and compounds in the ecosystem. Login biogenic elements from the abiotic environment (atmosphere, lithosphere) into the living components of the biogeochemical cycles. Cycle of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, water. Global biogeochemical cycles of chemicals.
2. Nutrient balance in the ecosystem. Characteristics balance (total gains and losses) of nutrients in the ecosystem. Characteristics of nutrient balance in the community during succession. Nutrient supply. Loss of nutrients. Monitoring the substance flows in the environment. Monitoring environmental quality.
3. Biogeochemical carbon cycle. The importance of the carbon cycle of life on earth. The essence of biogeochemical carbon cycle. Influence of the carbon cycle man (the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil) and increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.
4. Biogeochemical cycle of nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus and water. Description of the nitrogen cycle. Description of the sulfur cycle. Description of the phosphorus cycle. The water cycle and the main water supplies.
5. Global environmental problems of the environment and their isolated observation. The exponential growth of the human population. The most serious global problems (human population growth and material consumption, global climate change, water scarcity, the thinning of the stratospheric ozone layer, acidification and eutrophication of ecosystems, loss of biodiversity, deforestation, land degradation, water pollution, waste production and air pollution).
6. The greenhouse effect and climate change. The essence of the greenhouse effect. Characteristics of greenhouse gases. Importance of carbon dioxide in the process of global warming. Sun's influence on global warming.
7. Depletion of the ozone layer. Penetration of CFCs in the stratosphere and catalytic decomposition of ozone. Depletion of ozone in the stratosphere.
8. Reducing biodiversity. Biodiversity. Threats to biodiversity (population growth, pollution and harmful effects of human activities, loss of habitat for organisms, deforestation, desertification, invasive biological species, excessive consumption of energy from organic sources).
9. Acidification of soils and waters. The importance of a mass balance study of small watersheds for understanding the process of acidification. Acidification as a global problem. Effect of acid precipitation on coniferous forests of the temperate zone. Effect of SO2 and NOx formation on dry and wet deposition of sulfur and nitrogen.
10. Eutrophication of surface waters. Natural eutrophication. Artificial eutrophication. Of eutrophication.
11. Soil degradation. Farmland. Forest land. Adverse factors that affect agricultural and forest land. Substances entering the forest and agricultural land due to air pollution. Acidification, eutrophication and contamination of soil. Minimizing the negative processes in forest and agricultural land.
12. Human population growth. The main driver of population growth. Economic growth in developed and developing countries. Effect of human population growth on the environment. Demographic forecasts.
