Course objectives
The course covers the interpretation of the protection and documentation of natural heritage (nature and landscape) at regional and global level. The course will provide the basic knowledge and skills needed to understand nature and landscape protection issues through the example of specific natural heritage conservation issues.
Syllabus
  • 1. Philosophical and ethical principles of nature protection.
  • 2. History of nature and landscape protection in the world and in the Czech Republic.
  • 3. Relationship between the Protection of Natural Heritage and Heritage Conservation.
  • 4. Biodiversity and its assessment.
  • 5. Main factors threatening biodiversity and causes of species extinction.
  • 6. Species and territorial protection of nature in the Czech Republic. Legislative security of nature and landscape protection in the Czech Republic.
  • 7. Documentation and monitoring of the status and threats to biodiversity.
  • 8. International programmes and agreements, and monitoring organisations. Ecological networks within Europe and the Natura 2000 programme.
  • 9. Global and regional priorities for the protection of natural heritage. Red lists and endangered species books.
  • 10. Management of natural heritage protection. Tourism and natural heritage.
  • 11. UNESCO natural and cultural heritage.
  • 12. Natural heritage protection and sustainable development.
  • 13. Community involvement in natural heritage management and conservation planning.
