Course objectives
This one semester course should introduce basic methods of archaeozoology, i.e. skeletal anatomy of individual animal species, age assessment based on tooth abrasion and postcranial skeleton etc. and the methods of documentation and excavation of faunal skeletons on archaeological sites. New methods in palaeogenetical studies, together with stable isotope analyses for assessing the origin, migration and diet of animals and palaeoenviromental reconstructions will be presented during the course. The possibilities to reconstruct the way of life of prehistoric people basing on the above mentioned methods. The course includes exercises, in which osteological material originating from the most common animal species will be presented to the students.
Syllabus
  • 1. History. 2. Methods of fieldwork and laboratory work with osteological material. 3. Basic anatomical notions. 4. Skull and teeths anatomy of pleistocene and holocene animals. 5. Postcranial skeletons anatomy of pleistocene and holocene animals. 6. Main diferences between construction of human or animal skull and postcranial skeleton. 7. Archeozoological elaboration. 8. Osteometry. 9. Sex-determination of animals and human. 10. Age-determination of animals and human. 11. Paleogenetics. 12. Application of stable isotop analysis in order to reconstruct migration, nutrition and paleoecology of animals and human. 12. Palaeopathology. 13. Taphonomy. 14. Palaeoecology. 15. Reconstruction human or animal appearence.
