Course objectives
The course focuses on the issue of modern access to cultural heritage in the form of digitization, transfer of iconography, cartography, etc. Modern electronic methods that make cultural heritage accessible to the widest possible public are introduced; the benefits of making cultural heritage available online for educational and scientific purposes, for the restoration and preservation of tangible monuments. The benefits for disadvantaged people are explained. Activities related to digitization and online access to cultural heritage, digital copy manipulation, communication and promotion of cultural heritage are characterized. Students will become familiar with the possibilities of searching and presenting the obtained information to the users, they will get to know the main domestic and foreign organizations working in the field of digitization and access to cultural heritage. The content of the course is focused on the presentation of concrete examples of making cultural heritage accessible and on work in systems that students will use as a tool when studying the original materials and preparing seminar work.
Syllabus
  • 1.Introduction to the problem, methods used, literature, specific sources and information sources.
  • 2.Issues of cultural heritage and access to cultural heritage using electronic methods, meaning and role, current form, basic concepts and terminology.
  • 3.Chronological development of the issue of making cultural heritage accessible, organisations and projects aimed at the protection and access to cultural heritage in the past, their effectiveness and examples of good practice.
  • 4.-5. Making the international cultural heritage of UNESCO accessible (E-Heritage, DigiCULT, Memory of the World Programme, etc.).
  • 6. Digital access to library funds (World Digital Library, American Memory Library of Congress Project, Europeana). Mass digitization of documents (Google Book Search, etc.)
  • 7. European initiatives to make cultural heritage accessible and to digitize documents.
  • 8.-9. Making cultural heritage available in the Czech Republic (development, concepts, systematic digitization, NKP).
  • 10. Accessibility and activities in the field of digitisation and accessibility of cultural heritage in the Czech Republic (Kramerius, Manuscriptorium, Digitisation Centre of the Academy of Sciences, digitisation of old NTK prints, Memory of the Nation, etc.).
  • 11. Systems aimed at facilitating and promoting regional culture.
  • 12. Possibilities of using modern access to cultural heritage in tourism (cultural tourism).
  • 13. Final synthesis of acquired knowledge.
