- Cílem předmětu je podat studentům základní informace o lingvistice a ligvistických disciplínách. Slouží také jako první seznámení s problematikou fonetiky, fonologie, morfologie a syntaxe.

- Jazyk a jeho funkce, jazykový vývoj, mluvená a psaná podoba, klasifikace jazyků, systém a struktura jazyka, lingvistika a její vývoj, metodologie lingvistiky, dělení lingvistiky, fonetika, fonologie, morfologie, syntax, lexikologie, sémantika, rétorika, etymologie, dialektologie, stylistika, matematická lingvistika, psycholingvistika, pragmalingvistika, textová lingvistika, neurolingvistika, sociolingvistika, lingvistická antropologie, filosofie jazyka, historická a srovnávací jazykověda. Součástí každého tématu je i suma odborných termínů, které budou vysvětleny a student by je měl ovládat.
