- Course objectives
- History of the Czech cinema since the beginnings till 1945. Key films will be shown and discussed. students will be shown the key Czech films from the beginnings till 1945. The projection will be accompanied by analysis.
- Syllabus
- The lecture:
1. A general view to the history of Czech cinema, periodization.
2. The beginnings of Czech film (Jan Kříženecký, Josef Šváb -Malostranský, Viktor Ponrepo). The first Czech film companies and their films.
3. Metamorphoses after World War I. Silent film during the First Republic.
4. The development of the art of film and the director's personalities (Gustav Machatý, Carl Junghans, Karel Anton, Martin Frič, ...), avantgarde film.
5. Sound film. Personalities and sound film genres during the First Republic. Czech comedy in the 30th and 40 years (Vlasta Burian, V + W, Oldřich Nový , Nataša Gollová...).
6. Personalities in Czech interwar sound film (Josef Rovenský, Martin Frič, Vladislav Vančura, Otakar Vavra...).
7. The constitution of cinema as an institution, the origins and development of the national film industry, film production differentiation.
8. Czech film during the occupation.
