Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand how we can use the evidence of paleography, codicology or text criticism for identifying not just contact networks between monasteries, but their possible inflence on formation and sharing the identity. To be able to do this, we also demonstrate the importance of clearly defined analytical apparatus using the concepts of modern humanities and social sciencies.

  • 1 Basic concepts - Identity / "Otherness" / Social Memory and historical Consciousness
    2 Přemyslid principality - the power of the prince and its geographic scope - Geographical analysis and Statistics of Cosmas Chronicle; regnal presence and concept of "power"; role of the elites in early Přemyslid Bohemia
    3-4 Přemyslids and the Holy Roman Empire in "imperial" chronicles and yearbooks - comparative analysis of the texts and their geographical widespread
    5-6 Přemyslids and Holy Roman Empire in narrative sources from Bohemia and Moravia - comparative analysis of the texts and their geographical widespread
    7 Relics - analysis of the texts ("Textkritik", liturgical space and political geography) ; geographical analysis
    8 Manuscripts of Crescente fide b. 1200 - paleography, codicology, "Textkritik", geographical analysis
