Course objectives
Course objectives: The main aim of the lecture is explain to students numerous archaeological finds from researches - ceramics. We focus on high middle ages and early modern ceramic productions and individual typological subjects. Students are going to inform about process of ceramic funds in urban provenance. We focus especially on illustrative examples from Silesia. It is very important correct interpretation of closed finds for archaeological praxis. Students are going to acquaint with modern methods during processing of closed finds.
Syllabus
  • 1. Pottery as a craft - historic introduction, iconography, toponymy, general terminology
    2. Technology - exploitation, preparation of the ceramic material, firing - pottery kilns
    3. Typology of pottery from Early Middle Ages
    4. Typology of pottery from High Middle Ages
    5. Typology of pottery from Early Modern Period
    6. Stove-making, technical and figural ceramic
    7. Explanation of how to save and processes associated with a secondary deposit in urban stratigraphy - illustrative examples of Silesia
    8. Evaluation of ceramic collection - interpretation and dating ceramic collection and individual ceramic
    9. Analysis of ceramic funds (mathematical and statistical analysis - vector analysis, cluster analysis)

    11. Modern methods of investigation ceramics (ceramic thin sections, chemical-technological analysis)
    12. Modern methods of investigation ceramics (3D rendering)
    13. Final test
