Course objectives
The lecture provides basic information about archaeology as a science discipline within the historical sciences and the object of its study. Attention will be paid to the basic terminology, systematics and notice abilities of archaeological sources and methods of archaeological work. Specifics of medieval archaeology and postmedieval period will be discussed. There will be presented a basic overview of Czech and Moravian archaeology organization and problem of presentation and protection of archaeological monuments. In the end, the course will focus on regional archaeology and individual topics will be illustrated by looking at key localities of the Moravian-Silesian border.

  • 1. The development of archaeology, its position in the historical sciences, subject of study, interdisciplinary cooperation.
    2. Terminology.
    3. Archaeological sources, their characteristics and notice abilities.
    4. Division into periods and its criteria, methods of chronology.
    5. Methods of archaeological work.
    6. Basic literature, professional databases, Internet resources
    7. Medieval archaeology and its specificity, Early and High Middle Ages archaeology.
    8. Postmedieval and industrial archaeology.
    9. Organization of archaeology in the CR, legislation and its evolution.
    10. Archaeology in preservation practices and presentation of archaeological findings.
    11. Regional archaeology, key localities of the Moravian-Silesian border.
    12. Excursions (archaeological research, possibly locality or museum exhibit).
