Course objectives

The aim of one - lesson lecture in a winter term of the first year is to present students with a basic scheme of the history of the ancient Front East, civilizations which were formed between 4th - 1st millenary B. C. in the area of a fertile crescent. The attention is paid mainly to economic, social and cultural history of the area, also with the reference to its later development in the frame of the Hellenic World and the Roman Empire.

Syllabus

• 1. Current status and perspectives of research on civilizations of the front of the East, an explanation of the basic concepts.
  2. History of ancient Egypt-date and periodization, the problems associated with them, exploring the history of Egypt, the proportion of Czechoslovak and Czech Egyptology.
  3. History of ancient Egypt II. -the main features of the economic development of Egypt, the social structure of ancient Egyptian society and its changes in time, foreign political developments
  4. History of ancient Egypt III. -death as indicating the phenomenon of spiritual life
  5. Problems of the study of ancient Mesopotamia-exploring civilizations in the region.
  6. Society of ancient Sumer and Mesopotamia the process of urbanization, the characteristics of the City State
  7. Culture of ancient Mesopotamia
  8. Palestine-the creation of the State of Palestine, the history of the Jewish people.
  9. The Bibel as a basic source for the belief and the history of the Jewish people and Christianity.
  10. The history of the Hittites.
  11. Phonicians.
  12. The peoples of Asia minor.
