Course objectives
The course will teach the students how the territory of what is now the Czech Republic evolved from the end of the Eneolithic until the end of the Hallstatt Period. The opening lectures will be dedicated to general classification of the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt Period as well as to absolute and relative chronology. Afterwards individual cultures will be paid attention, first those of the Late Eneolithic (Corded Ware Culture, Bell Beaker Culture), Early Bronze Age (Únětice Culture, Epi-Corded Ware cultural Complex, Maďarovce-Věteřov Culture) and the Middle Bronze Age barrow cultures. Later during the course cultures will be discussed of the Late and Final Bronze Age (Lusatian Urnfield Clture, Middle Danube Urnfield Culture and Upper Danube Urnfield Culture), and the Hallstatt Period (Horákov, Platěnice, Bylany and other Cultures). Special focus will be laid on the emergence and decline of individual cultures, their classification as well as burial customs, settlement forms, religion and other characteristics of life of the then human society. An important component will also be the knowledge of pottery, metal industry, and objects of stone, bone and other materials. In tutorials, the students' knowledge of material culture of the prehistoric periods in question will be enhanced by working out papers on assigned topics and by practical demonstrations of archaeological material as well.
