Course objectives
In this course, students are informed about literary historical methods and concepts with the emphasis on Czech tradition in literary criticism and actual discussion about possibilities to (re)construct history.
Syllabus
  • Topics of the course: emergence of literary history (as Literaturwissenschaft) and positivism, the concepts of Geisteswissenschaft a antiposivism, literary evolution in formalism, structuralistic project, Marxism a sociological approaches, hermeneutics and the Constance school, challenging literary historical essentialism: R. Barthes, H. White, historiography as narration (P. Veyne); Foucault's impulse and its importance for literary history; new historicism; contemporary Czech discussion on writing history.
