Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the principles of modern protection of collections in museums. The course represents a basic level for further laboratory practice of new students. Students will gradually get acquainted with the theoretical basis of conservation and restoration, terminology, principles of management of the protection of museum collections, legislative framework, ethical standards, theoretical aspects of the origin and degradation of materials. Students should acquire basic skills for understanding a complex system of conservation and restoration intervention, including research, preventive or remediation conservation, restoration and documentation. Emphasis is placed on the protection of the complex value of museum collection objects.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to define basic concepts in the field of conservation and restoration; to get acquainted with the history of conservation and restoration; follow the ethical rules of the conservator-restorer and make adequate documentation of the intervention; to design and evaluate the parameters monitored in preventive conservation, to propose a research procedure of treated objects; describe the basic procedures of conservation and restoration of metals, silicates, textiles, leather, paper and wood.
