Course objectives
The definition of ethnography in connection with other social sciences. Nations, traditions and folk customs. History and specifics of discourse. The iconography of folk art and crafts as a historical source.
Learning outcomes
Students will get acquainted with the history of the field, the specifics of traditional folk culture, its specific manifestations, iconographic documents and issues of folk and popular art.

  • 1. Descriptions of nations from antiquity to the late Middle Ages 2. Ethnic issues in the 16th century 3. The contribution of discoverers and encyclopedists to the history of ethnology 4. Central European ethnography in the international context 5. Ethnography of the 17th and 18th centuries 6. Development of science and personality in the century 18.a in the first half of the 19th century 7. Concepts of the 19th century - from Slavic ethnography to folklore 8. Period of ethnographic research. Folk culture. 9. From ethnography to ethnology - the second half of the 20th century 10. Preparation for field research 11.-12. Ethnology in the museum
