Course objectives
Lectures are focused on the analysis of the phenomenon of monumentism from Antiquity, through the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century in Europe, and especially in Central Europe. Emphasis is placed on the tradition of Czech monument thinking in the Central European context; this thinking is observed in relation to the development of science, culture and art of civil society in the years 1850 - 1918.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the development of monument preservation from Antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century;
- describe the basic milestones, specifics and personalities of the history of monument preservation in the Czech and European scale;
- to analyze the activities of institutions and the legal regulation of monument preservation in history.
Syllabus
  • 1. Literature and sources on the topic. Basic terminology.
  • 2. Preservation of cultural heritage in the Middle Ages in Europe.
  • 3. Preservation of cultural heritage in the Middle Ages in the Czech lands.
  • 4. Profanation of the concept of monument in the Renaissance and the replacement of the sacral dimension by an aesthetic dimension in Europe.
  • 5. Profanation of the concept of monument in the Renaissance and the replacement of the sacral dimension by an aesthetic dimension in the Czech lands.
  • 6. The situation in the Baroque - Baroque historicism.
  • 7. Enlightenment and the formation of modern monument preservation; situation in France, Great Britain and Germany in the 19th century.
  • 8. Enlightenment and the formation of modern monument preservation; situation in the Czech lands in the 19th century.
  • 9. Monument preservation and development of art history; interest in monuments and the development of the theory of architecture - style category (G. Semper).
  • 10. The situation in the Czech lands from Romanticism to the establishment of the Club for Old Prague.
  • 11. Vienna School of Art History and the Formation of Modern Preservation of Monuments in Central Europe around 1900 (A. Riegl, M. Dvořák).
